Position ? Software Engineer



Goal.com is the premier destination for all things soccer and has one of the largest online soccer audiences in the world with approximately 20 MM unique visitors each month. We are a predominately open-source shop with a focus on object-oriented PHP, MySQL, Apache, and memcache (although one key system is built using C#). The software engineer in this position will be expected to work from a home office. Responsibilities


- Implement and refine the systems supporting Goal.com–content management, page rendering, social media integration, match statistics, and video delivery?both to the web and mobile devices.

- Work within a tight, highly skilled development team driving concepts through wireframes, engineering, test, launch, and ongoing iteration.

- Assist with the resolution of outages and other tactical production issues.

- Proactively work to improve our overall architecture, especially as it relates to performance and scalability. We are the 12th largest sports site in the world so performance and scalability of our code matters.

Qualifications 


- Passion for clean, smooth-running systems, and pride in helping build high performance and highly scalable systems.

- 3+ years of object-oriented programming experience; the ideal candidate has object-oriented PHP programming experience.

- Strong grasp of SQL and how to structure efficient queries.

- Understanding of Apache web server.

- Understanding of XML, XSL, and other W3C standards.

- Experience with Subversion.

- Not afraid to dive into the code.

- Experience developing in a Linux environment.

- Highly flexible and extremely efficient, doesn?t mind multiple iterations on the way to the right answers.

- Comfortable working closely with developers in small team environment on tight deadlines.

- Ideal candidate has previous experience with backend software engineering at a high traffic volume web site.

- Understanding of web architectures and web development.

- Willing to assist troubleshooting production issues even when they occur outside of regular business hours.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.

- Highly motivated and works well both independently and within a team.

- BS or higher degree in Computer Science or equivalent experience.

- Goal.com is global and distributed, and we use Skype and email heavily to communicate. Individuals interested in this position should be comfortable working in this manner. There are some light travel requirements in order to participate in quarterly face-to-face engineer team meetings.
